Early Start Spring Program           May Session

The May Early Start program is for sailors in CANSail 2 and above.

This summer we plan on having an active Green Fleet and Competitive race team. The early start program is an opportunity for those sailors that may be interested in racing or just want an early start to the sailing season to get back on the water.

We are offering both Opti and 420 classes.

The classes will be Tuesday evening from 1700 to 2030 and Saturday from 1000 to 1600. In the case of inclement weather classes may be rescheduled to Thursday and Sunday.

June Session Early Start

Wet Feet (ages 5-9)

Young children spend time on and off the water to introduce them to the sport and culture of sailing and the Junior Sail program at SMSC .

A very gentle beginner course with the day comprising of sailing an Optimist, onshore sailing classes and recreational activities that include field games, nature walks, visiting local beaches by water, and swimming.


No experience required.

Average Age: 5-9 Years Old


Children may register for both the morning and afternoon sessions in a single week.

Please note that younger first time sailors may find an all day program quite tiring.

Learn to Sail Fundamentals

This introductory program is for those looking to further explore the sport of sailing with no experience required, all while keeping fun as the main focus. Beginner sailors build a strong foundation of sailing skills, both technical and practical, such as sail trim and teamwork The children are placed in a boat best suited for their size (Opti's or Pico's) and are gradually introduced to important concepts to improve their sailing experience along with exciting adventures on and off the water.


Average Age: 8-12 Years Old

Opti Intermediate and Learn to Race - 1 week

Designed for young sailors that want to further develop their skills and looking forward to trying their hand at racing.This program will put a focus on learning the foundations of racing specific terminology, tactics and boat handling. This group is intended for sailors that have learned the basic skills and are ready for more of a challenge. This group may compete in Club and local regattas.

420 Intermediate and Learn to Race  -  2 week

Sailors will be introduced to RAD (reduced area design) and full rig C420's . This program will put a focus on learning the foundations of two man dinghy sailing with an introduction to racing specific terminology, tactics, and boat handling. This group is intended for sailors that have learned the basic skills and are ready to expand their horizons. These sailors may compete using C420's in local Club regatta to grow their confidence and racing experience before moving onto the next step.


CANSail 2-3


This is a two week program due to the team work required between skipper and crew and the more advanced sailing technics.

Advanced Opti - Opti Race Team  - 2 week

Moving onto the OPTI race team with a focus on performance and refined racing skills. The team will also learn a variety of other sailing skills to complement any path they wish to pursue once graduating from the Optimist, including seamanship, personal boat maintenance. Race team members learn to value sportsmanship while competing at regattas and mentoring junior sailors.

Get ready to work as a team and compete in local regattas in the double-handed C420. Sailors team up in pairs to practice advanced skills like spinnaker and learn advanced racing concepts. Communication and teamwork are key to being successful in this program while discovering new areas of the sport. Sailors are expected to be proficient in fundamental and intermediate sailing.
